Webinar: “Should I stay or should I go?” – Voices from within, and beyond, the oil and gas industry

March 27 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Presenters: Grace Augustine (Associate Professor in Business and Society at the University of Bath) and Fabien Littel (Lecturer in People and Organisations at Oxford Brookes University)

When: Friday 27th March 12.30 – 13.30 GMT

In 2023, the IPCC made it clear that no new fossil fuel projects should be pursued. Three years down the line, oil and gas operators have doubled down on their fossil fuels extraction activities, leaving behind any former ambitions for low / no carbon energy transition they had previously articulated. For many working in the industry and concerned for the future of our environment, justifying their ongoing involvement with the oil and gas sector becomes ever more challenging.

This webinar will present new research on why oil and gas workers with significant climate concerns are choosing to stay in or leave the industry, and how they navigate the moral, emotional, and career consequences of their decisions.

Drawing on in-depth interviews with over 50 current and former oil and gas workers, the session explores the motivations, turning points, and pathways of those who have stepped away from the industry due to the climate crisis, alongside insights into why others remain despite growing unease.

This webinar is aimed at anyone who wants to understand how climate concerns are translating into decisions to stay or leave the oil and gas sector—including current industry professionals, former employees, researchers, and others interested in the human dimensions of energy transition. For those still working in the industry who may be in the process of navigating their next career moves, we hope that this knowledge and community can help them feel less alone in their own experiences and challenges.

The webinar will combine the presentation of research findings with space for questions and discussion.
