Head shot of Mahammad Aghamirzayev

Mahammad 's Story

Mahammad Aghamirzayev worked in BP’s HSE & Carbon team after joining the company in 2019, focusing on emissions management and alternative energy. Inspired by BP’s climate ambitions at the time, he believed he could help drive meaningful change from within. But after starting a master’s degree in Sustainable Energy Futures at Imperial College, he saw BP’s strategy shift away from low-carbon investment, and realised his career path was no longer aligned. Today, he is the founder of Robotize Ltd, developing digital transformation services and a greenhouse gas emissions management platform.

Working in the Fossil Fuel Industry

I studied chemical engineering with the goal of one day working at BP, and after completing an internship in 2018, I joined the company full-time in 2019. I was excited by BP’s ambition at the time to lead the industry toward lower-carbon energy and better environmental performance.

I worked within the HSE & Carbon team, where I gained exposure to emissions reporting, operational sustainability, and environmental management. It was a highly supportive environment where I learned constantly from the people around me. I was particularly interested in hydrogen and alternative fuels, and I could see genuine efforts being made internally to explore cleaner energy pathways. At that stage, I felt hopeful that large energy companies could play a major role in the transition.

When I realised it was time to leave

In 2023, I took academic leave from BP to study an MSc in Sustainable Energy Futures at Imperial College London. My intention was to return and work more directly on alternative energy and synthetic fuel projects.

During that period, BP’s strategy shifted significantly. Following leadership changes the company reduced the level of emphasis it had previously placed on green transition initiatives. My team also went through changes, and it became clear that the path I had imagined within the company was no longer available.

That realisation pushed me to rethink what I wanted from my career. I decided to leave and build something independently, where I could have full control over the values, priorities, and direction of the work.

What I’m Doing Today

Today, I run my own company, Robotize Ltd. Part of my focus is on providing digital transformation consultancy service as one stream. As a second stream I am building digital tools.

I am currently developing a greenhouse gas emissions management platform designed to help organisations measure, monitor, and reduce their environmental impact. What motivates me most is having the freedom to choose projects that align with my values and contribute positively to society and the environment.

For me, leaving the industry was a fast and clean break and gave me the direction I was in need of.

Parting Reflections

As an end note, I would add the reassurance that things at the end will always work out.

As individuals we must make sure we are happy of our choices and confident of where the road is taking us. If in doubt, consider changing your path and take the right actions to do so. Belief, confidence and resilience in moving towards where you see yourself will bring you new and better opportunities.
